Multimedia technology, with its array of new hardware and software, can present a variety of potential performance and configuration issues. Some of these issues are addressed here. This README file contains information on the following topics: * Correcting Sound Problems * Improving the Speed of Your Computer * General Usage Notes * Hardware-Specific Notes * Bookshelf and Word for Windows Integration * Bookshelf and Windows NT * QuickShelf Notes _________________________________________________________________ NOTE: For additional information on Bookshelf technical issues, be sure to read the Frequently Asked Questions topic in Bookshelf Help. _________________________________________________________________ ========================= CORRECTING SOUND PROBLEMS ========================= If you don't hear anything when you play animations or pronunciations, be sure that * A sound card is installed. * A speaker is connected to the jack on your sound card (not to the CD-ROM drive). * The volume is set to an audible level. You can test sounds with the Sound option in the Windows Control Panel. If you hear no sound during the tests, open the Drivers option to check the sound driver files. These drivers must be compatible with your sound board. Be sure that drivers for both WAVE audio and MIDI-synthesized music appear in the Drivers dialog box. If necessary, set up your sound board again. If you still can't hear sounds, contact the sound board manufacturer to verify that you are using the correct drivers and that no hardware conflicts exist. If you have installed the Windows 3.1 operating system and can play pronunciations but not musical examples, you might need to change your MIDI map. When Windows 3.1 is installed, Setup renames the MIDIMAP.CFG file to MIDIMAP.OLD and installs a new MIDIMAP.CFG file. If your original MIDIMAP.CFG file contains custom setups that use sound drivers not provided by Windows, you can change the port settings using the MIDI Mapper option in the Control Panel, or you can use your original file by performing the following steps: 1. Rename MIDIMAP.CFG to MIDIMAP.WIN. 2. Rename MIDIMAP.OLD to MIDIMAP.CFG. ==================================== IMPROVING THE SPEED OF YOUR COMPUTER ==================================== Bookshelf 1994 uses a lot of your system memory to display graphics, animations, and video clips. If Bookshelf seems to run slowly, try taking the following steps to improve your computer's performance: * Close all unnecessary applications. * If your computer is a 386, set up a permanent Windows swap file on your hard drive. (See your Windows User's Guide for more information.) Windows usually creates a temporary swap file, but if your hard disk is full or fragmented, this temporary file can become unavailable. Make the size of the permanent swap file at least 2048K (kilobytes). * If your computer runs at 20 MHz or slower and you have only 2 MB (megabytes) of RAM, use a 16-color driver for your display, even if your video card is capable of displaying 256 colors. To change the display driver, run the Microsoft Windows Setup program from MS-DOS or Windows and select the standard VGA driver. * Run Bookshelf without the SmartDrive device driver. To disable SmartDrive, open the CONFIG.SYS file in Notepad, change the DEVICE=SMARTDRV.SYS line to REM DEVICE=SMARTDRV.SYS, and then save the edited CONFIG.SYS file. * Defragment ("clean up") your hard disk by running a disk defragmentation program. * Ensure that your CD-ROM drive is MPC-compatible (that is, that the drive can transfer data from the CD at 150 KB per second while using less than 40% of the CPU bandwidth, AND that the drive has an average seek time of less than one second). Check the documentation that came with your CD-ROM drive. * Add more extended memory to your computer. You can determine how much extended memory is available by typing MEM and pressing Enter at the MS-DOS prompt. You need a minimum of 4 MB of memory to play sounds and run animations. For comprehensive documentation on improving performance, consult your Windows manual. =================== GENERAL USAGE NOTES =================== * Bookmarks and annotations are not updated from older versions of Bookshelf. If you install a new version, you must create new notes. * If a screensaver takes over the screen during the Bookshelf demo, the demo will be reset to the first frame. (You might want to disable screensavers while viewing the demo.) * When copying 256-color images, be aware that unless you copy to a program that can handle 256 colors, such images will appear in 16 colors. ======================= HARDWARE-SPECIFIC NOTES ======================= The following are known hardware-specific issues that can affect Bookshelf. Where possible, solutions or workarounds are provided. Dell 16-color drivers (512K memory) ----------------------------------- * A white outline surrounds animations. Tiga 16-bit driver (640x480) ---------------------------- * Bold phrases and hot text sometimes shift down by about half a line, partially obscuring the text beneath them. Try moving to a different article and then returning; this typically solves the problem. Tiga 24-bit driver (640x480) ---------------------------- * A white outline surrounds animations, partially obscuring other animation elements and labels. * Some graphics might appear slightly fuzzy and grainy. DeskJet 500C Color Printer -------------------------- * If you try to print in color while using the unidrv.dll driver, you might experience problems. To solve the problem, choose Print from the File menu, and then click the Setup button. In the Setup dialog box the Color box should be unchecked. Try printing again. Dell Video Driver P32K600 ------------------------- * A bitmapped image appears along with extraneous lines across the screen, followed by system failure. * Contact Dell and obtain the proper drivers. Creative Labs Sound Blaster 16/16ASP -------------------------------------- Compressed audio clips may fail to play if you are using a Sound Blaster 16 or Sound Blaster 16 ASP sound card. For example, you may not be able to play any sounds in the dictionary, but animations in the encyclopedia may play correctly. This problem occurs because some computers are unable to use the 16-bit DMA (direct memory access) channel on the Sound Blaster cards. To correct this problem, switch the HDMA channel to use DMA or 8-bit DMA. You must change this setting in the following two places: - The Drivers dialog box in the Windows Control Panel -and- - The SBCONFIG.EXE configuration program included with the Sound Blaster cards To change the settings, follow these steps: 1. Choose the Drivers icon in the Windows Control Panel. 2. Select the Sound Blaster 16 Wave/Midi driver and choose Setup. 3. Under the HDMA setting, set the selection to DMA. 4. Choose OK. Choose Do Not Restart Now. 5. Exit Windows. 6. At the MS-DOS prompt, switch to the SB16 directory and run SBCONFIG.EXE. 7. Follow the instructions provided by this configuration program. It assists you in selecting and testing the following variables: Variable Select ------------------------------ Base I/O port Autoscan MidiPort address Autoscan DMA interrupt Current 8-bit DMA Current 16-bit DMA Use 8-bit DMA After you have finished making these selections, the SBCONFIG program will restart your computer. 8. Restart Windows. All compressed audio should now play correctly. For more information about Sound Blaster cards and about this problem, contact Creative Labs technical support at (405) 742-6622. Sound Blaster is manufactured by Creative Technology Ltd., a vendor independent of Microsoft; we make no warranty, implied or otherwise, regarding this product's performance or reliability. Media Vision Pro Audio Spectrum 16 ----------------------------------- A small number of Media Vision sound card drivers (Pro Audio Spectrum cards) may cause problems. If you have a Media Vision card and don't hear sounds, try upgrading your driver. * The wave driver fails while playing pronunciations in the dictionary, encyclopedia, and altas. * Contact Media Vision. (For information on contacting Media Vision, see below.) Media Vision Pro Audio Spectrum ------------------------------- Audio clips may sound "scratchy" (that is, distorted) when played from the Media Vision Pro Audio Spectrum. To correct this problem, change the Media Vision driver DMA setting to 7. To change the driver settings: 1. Choose the Drivers icon in the Windows Control Panel. 2. Select the Media Vision Wave/MIDI/Aux driver and choose Setup. 3. Under the DMA setting, set the selection to 7. 4. Choose OK. Choose Restart Now. Audio clips should now play correctly. The Pro Audio Spectrum driver products included here are manufactured by Media Vision,Inc., a vendor independent of Microsoft; we make no warranty, implied or otherwise, regarding these products' performance or reliability. Where possible, solutions or workarounds are provided. Audio and NT ------------ * When Bookshelf is installed on a machine running Windows NT 3.1, you may not hear audio clips, such as pronunciations, in Bookshelf. Windows NT 3.1 cannot play audio in the format that Bookshelf uses. QuickShelf Find and NT ---------------------- * When your machine is running Windows NT, you can experience problems when you select a word in another application and use QuickShelf to perform a full-text search on the word in Bookshelf. Bookshelf will appear but the search will not be performed because QuickShelf cannot move the text out of the application running in NT. Keep Bookshelf open on your desktop as an icon, so you have easy access to it from other applications when you want to do a full-text search on a word. QuickShelf Keys and NT ---------------------- * When your machine is running Windows NT, you may not be able to use QuickShelf key combinations from 32-bit applications because QuickShelf cannot move text out of these NT applications. In this case, keep Bookshelf open on your desktop as an icon; this way you will have quick access to it. ================ QUICKSHELF NOTES ================ For QuickShelf and Windows NT issues, see the "Bookshelf and Windows NT" section, above. QuickShelf Keys and MS-DOS Use ------------------------------ * QuickShelf keys allow you to look up selected text in Bookshelf from any Windows application. However, you cannot bring up Bookshelf using QuickShelf keys from an MS-DOS application or from the MS-DOS prompt. Additionally, selected text in an MS-DOS application will not be used to perform a QuickShelf lookup when using the QuickShelf buttons. Other windows applications that do not copy text in the standard way also may not work with QuickShelf. QuickShelf and Quote of the Day ------------------------------- * Whenever you use the Quote of the Day dialog box, the QuickShelf keys are disabled. QuickShelf and the Clipboard ---------------------------- * Clicking a QuickShelf button or using a QuickShelf key combination replaces the contents of the Clipboard. Moving the QuickShelf Toolbar ----------------------------- * Open the QuickShelf Customize menu by either right-clicking on the Toolbar or by left-clicking the down arrow button at the right end of the Toolbar, and then clicking Customize. Click the Customize View Tab, and then select either Regular buttons or Large buttons, and click OK. QuickShelf now has a title bar you can click in and then drag to a new location.
